A leading cause of mental retardation is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), which is caused by the mother drinking alcohol during her pregnancy. The only way to prevent it is to avoid drinking any alcohol during pregnancy. Breast-feeding women should avoid alcohol — alcohol can pass through breast milk too. Many other drugs can cause damage to a developing fetus, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medication, cigarettes, and most illegal drugs.

• Amphetamines

  Appearance: comes in tablets or capsules, may be white/yellow powder or chunks.



• Barbiturates
  Common Street Names: yellow jackets, red devils, rainbows, Christmas trees, reds, blue bombers.
  Appearance: tablets or capsules.



• Cocaine
  Common Street Names: snow, C, blow, coke, freeze, base, crack, rock.
  Appearance: white–ish powder, or little white rocks.
  
  
• Ecstasy
  Common Street Names: E, X, XTC, adam, euphoria, MDM ,love doves.
  Appearance: usually sold in the form of tablets with pop-culture icon on top.



• Heroin
  Common Street Names: H, smack, horse, junk, dope, skag.
  Appearance: brown or white powder, or a black sticky resin or tar.



• LSD
  Common Street Names: acid, blotter, dose, window pain.
  Appearance: orderless colourless liquid. Individual doses are dropped onto sheets of blotter paper with pictures on it.



• Psilocybin
  Common Street Names: magic mushrooms, shrooms, mush.
  Appearance: sold as mushrooms. They can also be a powder and sold as capsules.



• PCP
  Common Street Names: P, angel dust, angel.
  Appearance: white powder. It can also be a liquid, capsule or tablet.



• Ritalin®

  Appearance: pills.



• Steroids

  Appearance: availible in both pill and liquid form.
