The tobacco found in cigarettes and spit tobacco has nicotine in it. Nicotine acts on your brain. It changes your mood. It may make you restless. You may have trouble paying attention. Nicotine is much more addictive than alcohol. Most people who regularly smoke come to physically and mentally depend on it. People who start smoking when they’re teens, tend to depend on it more than those who start smoking later. A third to half of those who try cigarettes become regular users. The constant pressure they feel from friends may play a part. Smoking feels good. The diseases caused by smoking that can kill you take time to develop. Once you have started smoking, it can be hard to quit. The younger a person is when they start smoking, the tougher it is for them to quit. But it is possible. More Canadians have quit smoking than currently smoke. Most kids who smoke say they want to quit.
