Most Canadians and most Albertans do not smoke. Only 19% of Canadians smoke. The smoking rate in Alberta is 21%. Young adults aged 20 to 24 have the highest smoking rate of any age group in Alberta: 30%. Most smokers start when they are teenagers. About one out of five young Albertans in grades 5 to 9 has tried smoking. About one out of three Grade 9 students in Alberta has tried smoking. Teenaged boys are more likely than girls to start smoking at an earlier age (between 5 and 11 years old). Most teenagers say pressure from friends who smoke is the number one reason teenagers start to smoke. Teens are also more likely to get or buy smokes from friends than from anywhere else. The good news is that teen smokers are the age group most open to quitting. © 2001-2007 AADAC - Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission Copyright and Disclaimer Statement | Privacy Statement |
